Uganda is a small, landlocked country in East Africa, bordered by Kenya, South Sudan, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. Uganda has long been a cultural melting pot, and is home to more than 30 indigenous languages and a rich array of cultures.
Uganda has sixty protected areas as well as ten national parks and almost a third of the country is covered by water. Lake Victoria, the largest in Africa, dominates the south while Lake Edward and Lake Albert lie to the west.
Uganda has four extinct volcanoes and one of the largest intact calderas in the world. Three of the eight Virunga Volcanoes are found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and can be climbed in under a day, perfect for inexperienced climbers or those short of time.
Uganda is home to the highest concentration of primates on earth and over half of all bird species in Africa are found in here, making it a rich and rewarding destination for birders.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to around 320 mountain gorillas – roughly half of the remaining population – making it a sought-after destination for gorilla trekking. The park is also home to over 350 species of birds, and 200 species of butterfly.
Made famous as the historic source of the Nile river, Jinja is bustling town of adventurers and thrill seekers. The town sits along the northern shores of Lake Victoria and is considered one of the most spectacular white-water rafting and kayaking destinations in the world.
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park. The park is located at the famous Murchison Falls, where the Nile River is squeezed through a narrow gap only 7 metres (23 ft) wide, before plunging 43 metres (141 ft).
